Etchells Worlds: Olympic gold medallist eyes the tile

Victorian, Tom King, the Sydney 2000 gold medallist skipper in the 470 dinghy steered his Iron Lotus crew to a 13-point overall lead on day three of the Etchells World Championship off Sydney, after rounding out his day with a pair of top three finishes in the two races completed.

Graeme Taylor best on opening day of Etchells Worlds

The Australian team of Graeme Taylor, Grant Simmer and Steve Jarvin (Magpie) made the best of the light weather on the first day of racing of the Etchells World Championship 2012 off Sydney Heads, but crews skippered by Tom King and Vincent Brun and snapping at their heels, just three and four points behind, respectively.

The weather gods smiled on the Grant Thornton Short Haul Division for their Passage Pointscore races from Sydney to Pittwater and return. Saturday's race started in 10 knots of southerly breeze which built to 15 knots during the day with a wind front moving up the coast, and when combined with blue skies and flat seas, produced champagne sailing conditions for the fleet of 16 starters.
